Message from Dr. Joseph St. Geme – Infectious Diseases Division Chief

Dear Colleagues-

It gives me great pleasure to announce that Dr. Theo Zaoutis has been named the new Chief of the Division of Infectious Diseases, effective July 15, 2014.  Theo first joined the CHOP community in 2000, when he began his fellowship in infectious diseases.  He was appointed to the faculty in 2003 and is currently a Professor of Pediatrics and Epidemiology.  In addition, he is currently a Senior Scholar at the Center for Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics, Director of the CHOP Center for Pediatric Clinical Effectiveness, and Director of the Master of Science in Clinical Epidemiology Training Program.  He has had a number of national leadership roles, with examples including membership on the AAP Committee on Infectious Diseases and Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society.  He has a very productive research program that focuses on the epidemiology of antibiotic resistance, pediatric fungal infections, and a variety of other infectious diseases-related topics.  He has current funding from the National Institutes of Health, the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute, and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality to support his research activity.  In short, he is a talented clinician investigator who is committed to patient care, medical education, and mentoring.

Please join me in congratulating Theo on his new leadership responsibilities and in thanking Bob Shaddy for leading an extremely successful search.  In addition, please join me in recognizing Paul Offit, who has provided outstanding leadership to the Division of Infectious Diseases for 22 years.  Paul will continue to lead the CHOP Vaccine Education Center and participate in patient care activities and will also pursue projects with NOVA, the National Education Association, and the Franklin Institute on vaccines.

Best wishes,
Joe
